NAMIBIA – ETOSHA NATIONAL PARK – 23 – 27 APRIL
Etosha is one of my favourite places in all of Africa. The disappointment of Naye Naye allows us an extra day at Etosha, bravo! We get to Grootfontein, fuel up, get the shopping done and arrive at Namutoni Camp, Etosha late afternoon to set up camp.
It’s a beautiful sunrise the following morning and we head off to Fischer’s Pan, where we are told there are flamingos. It’s true, there’s plenty of water and flamingos, pelicans and all manner of aquatic birdlife around.
There’s plenty of game too, we see giraffe, jackal, springbok, zebra, wildebeest, impala, kudu, gemsbok and hyaena but no cats or elephant as yet.
Next day we take the drive to Halali, in the centre of Etosha but it’s fairly quiet.
The following day we take the Fischer’s pan loop and at around 7 am there is something crossing the dirt road as we approach a waterhole called Twee Palms. On closer inspection (with binos) it turns out to be a pride of lion. There are 11 in total and they are striding across the pans to get to the water. What a beautiful sight in the early morning golden light. Seeing the lions striding across the Pans in clear view is quite exciting, almost surreal and so different to seeing them in the bush. Can’t believe our luck as they have been absent from the area for a few weeks. We catch them up and spend a glorious hour or so observing them as they slake their thirst. There are two lioness and the rest are all sub adults with one or two youngsters.
We top off the Etosha trip with a visit to Klein Namutoni waterhole that afternoon where we have privilege of watching elephant and black rhino come down to drink just before dusk.

Great photo’s Charlie and Emma 🙂 Very jealous – have wonderful memories of Etosha. Cheers for now, Kevin
Thanks Kevin, such a special place!
Wonderful shots of the roller in mid-swallow and the outstretched flamingoes. Oh, and the ostriches, too. Seems like a good time of year to be in Etosha.
Biddle was excellent Bobbi! Thanks!
